Dopo un’attesa paragonabile solo a quella della Ginger Diva, i Sillies ci hanno gentilmente concesso quest’intervista dopo il loro concerto al Circolone di Legnano, stavolta in 4 e senza il caldo afoso estivo…infatti faceva freddo ed era umido, ma d’altronde, anche ogni intervista ha bisogno del giusto tempo meteorologico per essere fatta. Enjoy!
Prima di tutto, come state?
Santa: Beh, very good.
Robi: Bene.
Santa: Molto bene.
Pablo: Bene.
Andrea: Bene.
Domanda rompighiaccio: fateci le previsioni del tempo per quest’inverno.
Pablo: Mah, io direi che dicembre-gennaio piovoso, febbraio neve…e poi marzo poom!
Santa: Per me neve un po’ prima.
Pablo: Neve un po’ prima? Tempestone di neve!
Robi: Neve diffusa a marzo.
Pablo: Neve diffusa…no, sometimes it snows in April.
Sono passati quasi 5 mesi dall’ultima intervista e sono cambiate un po’ di cose…parlateci dei cambiamenti che ci sono stati.
Robi: 5 mesi?? Bernate Ticino, col fuoco in cucina…niente, i demoni giapponesi hanno avuto troppa paura di noi e non ci volevano in 5, quindi siamo rimasti in 4. Però lui (Andrea) è alto come due di quelli vecchi.
Pablo: Son cambiate un po’ di cose e c’è da dire che io adesso mi sento un po’ distaccato dalla band perché sono tre bei figlioli.
Santa: Ma tu colmi con la tua virilità, il tuo crine supera ogni livello.
Robi: E voi come ci trovate dopo 5 mesi?

Robi: Eh va bè…niente, ci trovano in 4 dopo 5 mesi.
Pablo: Dopo 5 mesi ci trovano in 4, dopo 4 mesi ci troveranno in 5.
Come avete trovato il nuovo Silly?
Santa: Eh, la storia è lunga, in effetti somiglia molto a quella dei Pelussje. Io e lui abbiamo suonato per 3-4 anni in una band, ci chiamavamo Beyond The Storm, facevamo prog-metal più o meno, mathcore, e…no serio non c’è niente da ridere, va bè, insomma, è nata così, gli altri due han deciso di mollare perché non eran più d’accordo con le nostre scelte artistiche, gli ho chiesto “Sei disponibile?” “Sì, ma non canto” e s’è visto che non canta.
Andrea, dicci com’è suonare con loro.
Andrea: Mah, è molto divertente, obiettivamente, specialmente dopo circa 1 anno e mezzo quasi 2 che non suoni più ritrovare comunque un tuo ex chitarrista con cui hai suonato parecchio tempo e altri due pezzi di pirla, è molto simpatico, sì.
Santa: Prima ha comprato maglia e cd da fan e poi è stato inserito nella band…ma comunque li abbiam pagati anche noi.
Andrea: Adesso vi faccio causa.
A quando il prossimo album?
Santa: Allora, l’idea inizialmente era di tirarlo fuori a natale, poi questa doppia dipartita ci ha rallentato senz’altro, siamo ottimisti, diciamo che probabilmente, forse per gennaio-febbraio dovremmo tirar fuori l’album completo, cioè non sarà più un Ep, sarà un album.
Progetti futuri?
Robi: Vacanze.
Santa: Progetti futuri…sì, adesso abbiamo un tour che sta per partire…febbraio, a metà febbraio parte, andremo in Canada, faremo una serie di 15 serate in Canada, un paio nel New Jersey, che tra l’altro ci dicono che lì la scena è abbastanza carica, e probabilmente ci rivedrete qui al Circolone, forse, però se non saremo ancora delle superstar.
Andrea: Diende tutto dal cachet…è lui (Pablo) che vuole un sacco di soldi, è lui che fa il prezioso.
Diteci da dove viene il nome, ma sul serio stavolta.
Pablo: E’ giunto il momento di svelare! Questa è l’origine vera e propria.
Robi: Eravamo noi tre (Robi, Santa, Pablo), e facevamo jam strumentali così a tempo perso…
Pablo: Facevamo colonne sonore di film porno anni ’70.
Santa: Questa è stata la prima definizione.
Pablo: Questa è stata veramente la prima definizione.
Robi: Una notte ho fatto un sogno strano dove vedevo che noi facevamo il nostro primo concerto in situazioni assurde, tipo lui (Santa) aveva la canotta sporca di sugo con delle macchie di olio, lui (Pablo) s’era messo delle robe strane sul basso tipo luci, effetti, cose e facevamo i minchioni, dove a fine concerto chiedevamo scusa per essere stati stupidi.
Santa:No questa però è seria.
Robi: E’ stupida ma è vera.
Come nasce una vostra canzone e a cosa vi ispirate quando componete?
Santa: Mah, allora posso testimoniare perché dei pezzi nuovi molta roba l’ho scritta io…a volte nasce da un’intuizione, bestemmie, oppure, non lo so, sono a casa con la chitarra in mano, faccio esercizi, suono, poi da lì cerco di lavorarci sopra, poi lo porto in sala e ci lavoriamo un po’ tutti insieme, ad esempio “Blue Demon” è nata ascoltando il pezzo dei Pelussje, seguendo la linea di basso e poi lavorandoci sopra con un po’ di back up.
Robi: E un caldo assurdo e no aria condizionata.
Quali sono le vostre maggiori influenze?
Santa: Qua si può parlare di elementi singoli perché ognuno ha le sue influenze. Insomma, le influenze di Pablo penso di poterle dire anche io…i Meshuggah, i Tool, i Foo Fighters…
Pablo: Sì, facciamo la scena grunge del ’90 più un po’ di stoner tipo Kyuss, Red Fang, ultimamente ascolto molta roba vecchia, tipo, va bè il mio gruppo preferito sono i Pearl Jam, però comunque, visto che siamo appunto di generi diversi ognuno mette le proprie idee all’interno del gruppo, quindi, magari lui (Santa) che ascolta roba un po’ più tecnica, così come Andrea, cioè portano il loro livello tecnico all’interno dei Sillies.
Santa: Diciamo che l’idea è un po’ quella di unire magari qualche concetto Incubussiano, Foo Fightersiano per parlarla in modo più mainstream, e buttarla dentro con qualcosa un po’ più low-fi, magari karate, cose così.
Robi: Io cerco di mettere dentro magari un po’ di Promise Ring.
Ma alla fine siete riusciti a contattare il maestro Osvaldo Paniccia? Possiamo aspettarci un art work firmato dal maestro per il vostro prossimo album?
Tutti: Magari!
Santa: Allora, noi contavamo sul cachet di stasera per chiamare il maestro, però purtroppo non abbiamo credito nel telefono, chiamare il maestro costa…
Robi: Però abbiamo scoperto quanto costa un suo quadro, che non è il suo più famoso, che è “Il cavallo ballerino”, costa 95.000 euro.
Santa: Ed è un po’fuori budget…per ora, dopo il Canada si vedrà.
Pablo: Ultimamente ci stiamo spostando un po’ sul Faccincani…
Robi: …sul De Michelis…
Visto che è Novembre, top 5 album da ascoltare a Dicembre.
Santa: Sicuramente “Grind The Ocean” dei The Safety Fire.

Ma adesso posso rivendere ad un prezzo disonesto su e-bay tutte le cose che appartengono al capitolo 1 dei Sillies?
Santa: Ma il prezzo era già disonesto, non puoi far di peggio.
Robi: No perché lei voleva sfruttare il fatto che, essendo cambiata la line-up…
Pablo: Tu hai le bacchette del batterista giusto? Robi sei fuori dal gruppo.
Santa: No comunque non siete autorizzate, il nome è lo stesso, portatelo avanti.
La ghost track dell’EP diventerà mai una vostra hit?
Santa: Eh, questo dipende da quanto la scoprono, perché ce ne sono alcuni che ascoltano l’intro e già gli fa cagare e buttano via il disco, quindi il problema è che bisogna proprio arrivarci alla ghost track, devi essere proprio focalizzato sul volerti liquefare il cervello.
Non suonerete più le vecchie canzoni: avete idea dei problemi che mi state causando?
Santa: No, nel senso che le suoneremo, attenzione, con calma, non le suoneremo tutte a tutti i concerti altrimenti faremmo una scaletta da due ore, questa sera siamo stati belli snelli, veloci, non abbiamo detto cazzate fra un pezzo e l’altro…però le suoneremo, magari in un concerto ne faremo una o due, in un concerto ne faremo tre, dipende, però non è che le abbandoniamo del tutto.
Pablo: Possiamo dire che per la prima volta abbiamo modo di girare la nostra scaletta.
Sappiamo cosa ne pensate voi tre, quindi, Andrea: cosa ne pensi delle uova?
Andrea: Delle uova? Mi fa cagare la frittata, per il resto le apprezzo.

After waiting for them for ages, Sillies stopped and chatted with us after their show at Circolone in Legnano, this time the weather wasn’t hot…infact, it was cold and humid…but you know what they say “every inteview needs its weather to be done”. Enjoy!
First of all, how are you?
Santa: Well, very good.
Robi: Good.
Santa: Very good.
Pablo: Good.
Andrea: Good.
Icrebreaking question: weather forecast for this winter.
Pablo: Well, I’d say rainy Dicember-January, snow in February…and then, on Mach, poom!

Pablo: Sooner? Snow storm!
Robi: Snow in March.
Pablo: No, sometimes it snows in April.
It’s been almost 5 months since we last interviewed you and some things have changed…tell us something about these changes.
Robi: Five months?? Bernate Ticino, fire in the kitchen…well, the Japanese demons fear us and they didn’t want us to be 5, so we are 4 now. But he (point at Andrea) it’s tall like the other two past members.
Pablo: A lot of things have changed and now I feel a little detached from the band because they are three handsome guys.
Santa: But you complete this thing with your virility.
Robi: How do you find us after 5 months?
In four…
Robi: Well, ok but…they find us in four after five months.
Pablo: After five months they find us in four, after four months they’ll find us in five.
How did you find the new Silly?
Santa: Well, it’s a long story, it’s kinda like the Pelussje’s one. Me and Andrea played for 3-4 years in a band, we were called Beyond The Storm, we used to play prog-metal more or less, mathcore, and…no I’m serious, it’s not funny! Anyway, this is how it began, the other two past members decided to give us up because they didn’t agree with our artistic choices, so I asked Andrea “Would you like to play with us?” “Yes but I won’t sing”, as you saw, he doesn’t sing.
So, Andrea, tell us how it is to play with them.
Andrea: Well, it’s very funny, really, especially after circa one year and a half, two years in which you didn’t play, and finding your old guitarist with whom you played for a long time and two other idiots, it’s very funny, yes.
Santa: Firstly he bought our t-shirt and our ep as a fan and then he got in the band…but we paid for them too anyway.
Andrea: I’m gonna sue you now.
When are you going to put our your new album?
Santa: Well, at the beginning we wanted to put it out on Christmas, but this double departure kind of slowed us down, but we are positive, so, let’s say that probably, on January-February we should be able to put the new album out, which is not going to be an ep but a full length.
Future projects?
Robi: Vacation.
Santa: Future projects…we have a tour who’s about to start on February, we’ll head to Canada, we are gonna play 15 shows in Canada, a couple in New Jersey, where they told us that the scene is very strong and then you are probably gonna see us again here at Circolone, maybe, it depends if we won’t be superstars yet.
Andrea: It depends on the pay…it’s he (points at Pablo) who wants a lot of money.
Tell us how did you come up with the name, but for real this time.
Pablo: Time has come to reveal the truth! This is the origin.
Robi: It was us three (Robi, Santa, Pablo) and we used to do instrumental jams just to pass the time…
Pablo: We used to make the soundtracks for porno movies of the ‘70s.
Santa: This has been the first definition.
Pablo: For real.
Robi: One night I dreamt something strange, I was watching us playing our first show in an absurd way, like, he (points at Santa) was wearing an undershirt with oil and tomato sauce stains, he (points at Pablo) put something strange on his bass, like lights, effects, stuff like that and we were being stupid, and at the end of the show we were apologizing for being silly.
Santa: This is the real story.
Robi: It’s stupid but it’s true.
How do you give birth to your songs and what’s the inspiration behind them?
Santa: I can answer this because I wrote the new songs…sometimes it begins with an intuition, some swearing, or, I don’t know, I’m at home with my guitar, I’m playing and I start from what I was playing, I work on it, then I take it at the rehearsal studio and we all start to work on it, for example, “Blue Demon” was born after listening to the Pelussje’s song, following the bass line and then working on it with a little back up.
Robi: And an absurd hot weather and no air conditioning.
What are your main influences?
Santa: We have to answer this as single persons, because each one has its own influences. I can say Pablos’s influences…Meshuggah, Tool, Foo Fighters…
Pablo: Yes, let’s say the grunge scene from the ‘90s plus a little bit of stoner lie Kyuss, Red Fang…in this period I listen to a lot of old stuff, like, my favourite band is Pearl Jam, but, as all of us listen to different things, everyone of us put something of his into the band, like, he (points at Santa) listens to more technical stuff, and so does Andrea, they bring their technical issues into Sillies’ songs.
Santa: I can say that the idea is to put together some Incubus, a little Foo Fighters, to say it in mainstream terms and put it with something more low-fi, karate, stuff like that.
Robi: I try to put in some Promise Ring.
Did you manage to call the master Osvaldo Paniccia? Can we expect your new artwork to be signed by him?
All: We wish!
Santa: Wel, we were waiting for tonight’s pay to call the master, vut then we found out that we had no money in our mobile phones and calling the master has it’s costs…
Robi: But we found ut how much one of his paintings costs, it’s not the most famous, it’s “Il cavallo ballerino”, it costs 95.000 euros.
Santa: And it’s a little out of our budget…for now, after our Canadian tour we’ll see.
Pablo: In this period we are also considering paintings made by Faccincani…
Andrea: …or De Michelis’…

Santa: The price was dishonest from the beginning, you can’t do worse than that.
Robi: She wanted to exploit the fact that as long as the line-up has changed…
Pablo: You have the drummer’s sticks right? Robi, you’re out.
Santa: Anyway, no, you can’t, the name is the same so stick to it.
Will the ghost track from your ep ever become a hit?
Santa: It depends on how many people discover it, because a lot of people listen to the intro and they already think that we suck and so they throw away the ep, so the problem is you have to get to the ghost track, you have to hold on the fact that you wanna bash your brains.
You won’t play old songs anymore, do you even know how many problems you are causing me?
Santa: No, I mean, we are gonna play them, we are not gonna play them all at all the shows otherwise we’ll be playing a setlist two hours long, tonigt we’ve been fast, we didn’t say stupid things between the songs…but we are gonna play old songs, maybe at a show we’ll play just one or two songs, at another show three songs, it depends, we are not gonna abandon them all for good.
Pablo: I can say that for the first time we have the chance to have a bigger setlist to play.
We know what you guys think about eggs, apart from Andrea, so, tell us what do you think about eggs?
Andrea: About eggs? I hate omlettes, but I like eggs.
