Una band che ultimamente è passata molte volte nel nostro paese sono i Roam, che già avevamo avuto il piacere di incontrare circa un anno fa, e finalmente in occasione della data insieme agli Against The Current siamo riuscite di nuovo a parlare un po’ con Alex Costello e Matt Roskilly. Ecco cosa ci hanno detto!

Il vostro album Backbone è uscito due mesi fa, siete felici del risultato?
Alex: Si, è stato bello
Matt: è stato figo, abbiamo suonato più o meno senza sosta da quel momento
A: ed è stato bello suonare le canzoni nuove
M: Abbiamo quelle canzoni da tempo ed è bello farle finalmente

Da poco è uscito il video di Tracks, come avete deciso di includere una canzone acustica nell’album?
A: Credo che ogni album debba contenere una canzone soft
M: è la canzone giusta per le mamme e per le donne, dovevano fare una canzone sdolcinata per loro, tutto il resto delle nostre cose è molto veloce
A: Dobbiamo far vedere anche altri lati di quello che sappiamo fare

In Deadweight avete collaborato con Matt Wilson dei Set Your Goals, come è nata la collaborazione? Come è stato lavorare con lui?
M: Siamo grandi fan della band, i Set Your Goals, loro sono una delle nostre band preferite, quindi abbiamo pensato “sarebbe bello se potessimo fare questa cosa, se Matt potesse cantare in una nostra canzone” e abbiamo scoperto che una delle persone che ci stava aiutando con l’album è suo amico, lo abbiamo contattato e lui è stato d’accordo, siamo stati molto fortunati

Una delle caratteristiche della vostra band è l’alternanza tra le due voci, tenete questo fattore in considerazione nella scrittura dei pezzi?
A: Scriviamo la canzone e poi ci dividiamo le parti, vediamo cosa suona meglio
M: Credo che i testi siano certamente scritti con quello in mente, sono come botta e risposta

Nell’album c’è una nuova versione di Head Rush, come è stato approcciarsi di nuovo a questa canzone?
A: Abbiamo pensato che questa canzone è molto speciale per noi, ci ha lanciato sin dall’inizio, è importante e volevamo farla uscire per le persone che non hanno mai sentito parlare di noi prima e ascoltano l’album e allo stesso tempo sentono una canzone che avevamo anche prima, è una buona canzone e volevamo ci fosse.
M: è stata la prima canzone che abbiamo pubblicato, volevamo continuare a suonarla, volevamo che nuove persone la sentissero e sentivamo che fosse la canzone tra le nostre più vecchie da portare avanti.

Nell’ultimo anno sono successe molte cose, ultima delle quali è il tour con una delle vostre band preferite, i Sum 41, com’è stato?
M: Fantastico
A: Irreale, è stato bello
M: All Killer No Filler è stato probabilmente il primo album che abbiamo comprato, per tutti noi, è stato il primo album che abbiamo mai avuto, siamo cresciuti ascoltandolo e non ce ne siamo mai stancati. Direi che loro sono la nostra più grande influenza e suonare davvero con loro è stato assurdo
A: Backbone è stato influenzato dai Sum 41 di sicuro
M: Li si può sentire molto nella nostra musica, è stato bello passare del tempo con loro. Sono stati molto di supporto per noi ed erano entusiasti della nostra musica, è stato quasi strano lavorare con persone a cui ti ispiri e che hai ascoltato crescendo che apprezzino realmente la tua musica e ne siamo molto grati.

È stato un anno difficile per il pop punk, molte band si stanno sciogliendo, perché pensiate stia succedendo? Sta finendo l’era del pop punk?
M: è abbastanza dura essere in una band, è divertente ed è la cosa più bella di sempre, ma allo stesso tempo non è facile, quindi presumo che le ragioni degli scioglimenti siano queste, è difficile stare sempre via da casa, fa schifo ma bisogna farlo, e alcune persone hanno solo bisogno di stare a casa. Credo che il pop punk vada bene, credo che band come Neck Deep e As It Is stiano spaccando
A: è ancora un buon momento per il pop punk
M: c’è ancora molto che deve arrivare per il pop punk

Voi siete giovani ma state aprendo per una band ancora più giovane di voi, vi sentite vecchi?
A: no perché loro sembrano più vecchi di noi, Will ha 19 anni, ma ne dimostra
M: E noi ne abbiamo 22 ma ne dimostriamo 19.
A: La prima volta che siamo stati in tour con loro non sapevamo che fossero così giovani
M: Pensavamo che avessero circa la nostra età, ma in realtà sono più giovani, vabbè, in ogni caso le persone non ci credono.

Sei un tipo da coniglio o da tartaruga?
M: Direi tartaruga perché sono pigro
A: Io avevo un coniglio, era bello
M: Tu sei una persona molto elastica quindi direi che sei uno da coniglio, salta in giro molto, io sono una tartaruga perché sono lento.

Qual è il vostro Pokemon preferito?
M: Questa è difficile
A: Hitmonlee
M: Hitmonlee è fantastico, Machamp è abbastanza figo, Cubone è il migliore, è carino
A: Scyther?
M:Scyther, mi piacciono Cubone e Scyther
A: Weepinbell, il peggior nome di sempre, te lo ricordi?
M: Era un nome brutto per un pokemon. Onestamente non so scegliere il mio Pokemon preferito, mi piaciono tutti i Pokemon, non discrimino.

ENGLISH VERSION

Your album Backbone came out two months ago, are you happy with the result?
Alex: yes, it’s really good
Matt: it’s been cool, we’ve been playing shows pretty much non stop since
A: And it’s been nice to play new songs
M: We’ve had the songs for a while and it’s good to get them out there

The Tracks video just came out, why did you decide to put an acoustic track on the album?
A: I think every album has to have a soft song to be fair
M: that’s a right song for the mums and the ladies, we had to write a soppy song for them cause all of our stuff is quite fast
A: we have to show our other sides that we can do

In Deadweight you collaborated with Matt Wilson from Set Your Goals, how did that collaboration come about? How was working with him?
M: We are really big fans of the band, Set Your Goals, they’re like one of our favourite bands, so we were like ‘oh it’d be cool if we could do this, it’d be could if Matt could sing in our track’ and we found out that one of the guys helping us with our album was friend with him, we got in contact and he was up for it, we were quite lucky in that sense. It was really nice for him to do that.

One of the main features of your band is the alternation between two voices, do you keep that in mind writing the lyrics?
A: We just kind of write the song and then split it, and see what sounds better
M: I guess the lyrics and vocals are written definitely with that in mind, they’re like a call and response kind of thing

In the album we find a new version of Head Rush, how was it to work again on that song?
A: We thought that this song was very special to us, that kinda boosted us from the start, it was a big song for us so we wanted to put it out there for someone who’s never head of us before and hears the album Backbone and hears a song we had back then, it’s a good song and we wanted to put it on that
M: it was like the first song we ever released, we wanted to carry on playing it live, we wanted new people to hear it and we felt like it was the song that we could push forward from our old ones

In the past year a lot of things happened, one of the last was that you opened for Sum 41 in the UK, how was that?
M: Amazing
A: Pretty ureal, it was pretty cool
M: All Killer No Filler is probably collectively our first album we bought, all of us, it was one of the first album we ever owned, always growing up listening to it, never got bored of it, I’d say they’re probably our main influence and to actually play with them was pretty insane
A: I mean, Backbone was pretty influenced by Sum 41 as well
M: You can hear it a lot in our music, they were really cool to hang out with
A: very nice
M: they were really supportive and they were stoked on our music and stuff like that, it was kind of a weird thing to work with the people you look up to and you grew up listening to actually appreciate your music and we’re thankful for it, it was cool

It’s been a tough year for pop punk, a lot of band are splitting, why do you think that happened? Has the pop punk revival come to an end?
M: It’s quite tough being in a band, it’s fun and it’s the best thing ever at the same time it’s not easy at all so I assume the reasons about bands break up are that it’s tough being away from home all the time, kinda sucks but you gotta do it, some people just need to be at home. I think pop punk is going pretty well, I think that bands like Neck Deep and As It Is are smashing it, they’re friends of ours
A: Still a good time for pop punk
M: it’s still coming up, there’s still plenty more to come for pop punk

You’re very young, but you’re opening for a even younger band, do you feel old?
A: No cause they look older than us, will who’s 19, looks like he’s about 25
M: And we’re 22 and we look like we’re 19.
A: When we first toured with them we didn’t know they were THAT young
M: We thought that they were around our age but turns out they’re actually younger than us so whatever, people wouldn’t believe it though

Are you a rabbit or a turtle person?
M: I’d say turtle cause I’m lazy
A: I had a rabbit, it was nice
M: You’re very springy person so I’d say you’re a rabbit, rabbit’s hop and it jumps around quite a lot, I’m a turtle cause I’m just slow and all

What’s your favourite pokemon?
M: that’s tough
A: Hitmonlee
M: Hitmonlee is awesome, Machamp he’s pretty cool, Cubone is the best, he’s cute
A: Scyther?
M: Scyther! I like Cubone and Scyther
A: Weepinbell is the worst name ever, do you remember that one?
M: it was a bad name for a pokemon. I honestly couldn’t name my favourite, I like all pokemon, I don’t discriminate
