Dopo un’estate passata a convincere i pop punk kids che Bukowski fosse il vero tormentone dell’estate, abbiamo avuto il piacere, dopo aver aspettato delle ore sotto la shower londinese, di chiacchierare nel buio di un van con Eddy Brewerton, frontman della emo band di Canterbury, Moose Blood.
La band ha da poco pubblicato il primo full lenght, “I’ll Keep You in Mind from Time to Time” ed ha appena terminato il primo tour in Europa e la cosa più evidente è l’incredulità della band rispetto ai traguardi finora ottenuti.

Parliamo di cose importanti…qual è la tua canzone preferita dei Dashboard? (citazione da”Carbis Bay)

Sarò abbastanza banale, dico “Hands Down”, si, perché è fantastica

Ok possiamo partire con le domande serie: “I’ll Keep You In Mind From Time To Time” è il vostro primo full lenght dopo un paio di EP, ed era tra i dischi più attesi, infatti ha ricevuto un buon feedback non è così? Vi aspettavate questo tipo di risposta?

No, per niente! Voglio dire, è stato davvero travolgente…noi siamo fieri del disco ovviamente ma non ci saremmo mai aspettati che piacesse a così tanta gente, non ci aspettavamo nulla a dire il vero, è fantastico, siamo più che contenti che piaccia a tutte queste persone.

E siete contenti di come suona? Noi pensiamo che rappresenti molto bene la band…

Penso proprio di si, la persona con cui abbiamo registrato, Beau Burchell, ha reso il disco quello che è ed ora, si, siamo molto eccitati per come sia venuto e per come suona.

L’avete registrato a Los Angeles, com’è stata questa esperienza? E com’è stato lavorare con Beau Burchell?

è stata un’esperienza pazzesca, è stato un sogno che si avvera. qualcosa che non pensi potrebbe mai succederti, andare là e registrare, è stato fantastico e Beau è diventato come uno dei nostri più cari amici, si, è stato spettacolare, ha reso la cosa quella che è, ha reso l’intera esperienza quello che è stata.

Avete anche firmato con No Sleep Records, come ci si sente ad essere sotto la stessa etichetta di molte delle band più importanti di questo periodo?

è stupefacente, è, anche questa una delle cose a cui non riusciamo a credere…e quando eravamo là e abbiamo incontrato tutti i ragazzi di No Sleep, ci hanno fatti sentire i benvenuti, sono stati fantastici, siamo molto eccitati per questo.

L’album contiene nuove versioni di alcune canzoni precedentemente edite come “Boston” e “Bukowski”, com’è ri-registrare una vecchia canzone? Pensi che suonino meglio ora? Sei contento di come siano venute?

Siamo molto contenti. Ri-registrarle è stato un po’ strano, perché era come se ci fossimo innamorati delle vecchie versioni per cui registrandole di nuovo c’era la preoccupazione di dovergli rendere giustizia, ma Beau le ha rese perfette e…noi volevamo averle nel disco quindi era una cosa che dovevamo fare.

Nelle vostre canzoni citate alcuni nomi fondamentali per l’emo (come Clarity, Deja Entendu, American Football e Dashboard Confessional), quanto sono stati importanti per voi questi dischi e queste band? Pensate sia importante conoscerli per comprendere meglio la vostra musica?

Non necessariamente. Ma per questo motivo, almeno per me, ma sono quasi sicuro di poter parlare per tutti, hanno cambiato la nostra vita perché siamo tutti cresciuti ascoltando queste band quindi credo che abbiano avuto un’enorme influenza su di me, forse non tanto sul sound del disco, ma sul nostro modo di scrivere canzoni, sul tipo di musica che ci ispira. Credo siano molto importanti per me.

I testi che scrivi sono molto personali e sinceri, secondo te per quale motivo molte persone riescono ad identificarcisi così bene? T

Cerco di essere davvero onesto quando scrivo i testi quindi, parlano di esperienze reali in cui penso che chiunque passi prima o poi. Sono felice se le persone riescono ad identificarsi.

Sappiamo che hai un paio di tatuaggi a tema Moose Blood, puoi parlarcene un po’?

Ne ho un po’, ne abbiamo tutti fatto uno per il nostro ultimo video, il M<3B. Poi abbiamo una canzone nel disco su mio padre che si chiama “Pups” e ce l’ho qui sulla faccia. Ne ho anche uno di Moving Home sul braccio, tutti ne abbiamo un paio.

Non credi che siano un po’ pericolosi, come quelli dedicati alle fidanzate?

La chiave è che quelli passati in questa band sono stati i due anni migliori della mia vita perciò qualsiasi cosa succeda li adorerò per sempre.

State tutti prendendo la decisione di lasciare i vostri lavori per concentrarvi sulla band a tempo pieno. Come vi sentite riguardo al futuro?

Pietrificati. Abbiamo avuto due tour di fila, questo e lo scorso, quindi non avevamo tempo per il lavoro per cui è stato un caso che ci ha portato a lasciare i nostri lavori. Ora non abbiamo assolutamente idea di cosa succederà, vedremo in futuro, ma per ora ovviamente fa paura.

Siete appena tornati dal vostro primo tour europeo con band molto importanti, raccontaci qualche aneddoto.

Siamo la band più noiosa del mondo quindi in realtà non ne abbiamo. Siamo rimasti a piedi un giorno e siamo stati abbandonati in Austria per un paio di giorni. A parte questo, di solito andavamo a letto presto ahaha però è stato un bellissimo tour.

Vorreste visitare più paesi europei la prossima volta?

Assolutamente, abbiamo bisogno di viaggiare e vedere posti nuovi.

Ora abbiamo un paio di domande più rilassate: Quest’ estate continuavamo a dire alla gente che Bukowski era la canzone dell’estate. Se tu dovessi scegliere una vostra canzone per farla diventare un vero tormentone estivo, quale sceglieresti?

Domanda difficile! Kelly Kapowski nel disco è abbastanza upbeat, quindi dico quella.

Pensi che l’emo revival stia veramente accadendo?

Bè, noi non ci siamo mai allontanati dal genere quindi, io non ho mai smesso di ascoltare queste band e questa musica quindi non l’ho nemmeno visto andare via. Ma credo adesso ci siano un po’ di band in più.

Ultima ma non meno importante, ecco la domanda che facciamo a tutte le band che intervistiamo: cosa ne pensi delle uova?

Uova? Le ho mangiate stamattina, mi piacciono. Abbiamo un modo di dire nella band, tipo se qualcosa va bene diciamo “this is good as eggs” o “it’s cold as eggs” quindi ci piacciono.

After a long summer spent trying to convince all the italian pop punk kids that Bukowski was the real summer anthem, we had the pleasure to chat with Moose Blood frontman Eddy Brewerton in the darkness of a van last week in London (really punk rock!).
Here’s what he told us:

Let’s talk about what’s important, like your favourite dashboard song…

I’m gonna be really obvious, I’d say “Hands Down”, yes ‘cause it’s great.

So now we can start with serious questions: “I’ll Keep You In Mind From Time To Time” is your first full lenght after a bunch of EPs and it was already critically acclaimed before it was out and in the end it received and amazing feedback, isn’t it? Did you expected this kind of response?

No, at all! I mean, it’s been really overwhelming, I mean we are so so proud of the record anyway but we didn’t expect so many people to like it, we were not expecting anything, it’s great, we’re more than happy with all of these people like it

And are you happy with how it sounds like? I feel like it represents the band very well…

I think so, the guy we recorded with, Beau Burchell, made the record what it is and now, yeah we’re so excited of how it came out and how it sounds.

You went to Los Angeles to record it, how was this experience? And what was it like to work with Beau Burchell?

This experience was crazy, it’s like a dream come true it’s like something like that doesn’t happen, going over there to record it was great and Beau, he’s become like one of our closest friends now, yeah, he was amazing, he made the whole thing what it was, the whole experience what it was.

You’ve also signed with No Sleep Records, how does it feel to be on the same label of some of the most relevant bands of this period?

It’s amazing, it’s, again, one of the things I can’t believe and when we were there we met all of the guys of No Sleep and they made us so welcome, they’ve been great, we’re so excited about it.

The album contains new version of preaviously released songs like “Boston” and “Bukowski”, what it is like to re-record an old song? Do you think they sound better now? Are you happy with how they came out?

We’re so happy, I think re-recording it was a bit weird, is almost like you kind fall in love with the older versions when we were recording ‘em and kinda redoing it is almost a little bit worrying, if you are not gonna do justice to them, but again Beau made them sound great and…we knew we want ‘em on the record, so it was a thing to do while we were there.

In your songs you name a few emo fundamentals (like Clarity, Deja Entendu, American Football and Dashboard Confessional), how important have these records and bands been in your lives? And do you think it’s important to know them to better understand your music?

Not necessary, but like for that reason, I mean, for me at least, I’m pretty sure I speak for all the guys, they changed our lives ‘cause we all grew up listening to that bands so i guess that they had a huge influence on me, maybe not on the sound of the record too much but on the way we write songs, the kind of music we…that inspires us. so i guess they’re really important to me

The lyrics you write are so personal and sincere, as for you why so many people manage to relate with them so much?

I try to be really honest when I write the lyrics so, it’s just about real life experiences and I think everyone goes through i feel happy if they can relate to them.

We know that you have a bunch of MB related tattoos, can you tell us something more about this?

I have a bunch, we all got for our last video the M♡B, I got in on my hand.
We have a song on the record about my dad called Pups and I got it on my face. I have Moving Home on my arm, we all got a few.

Don’t you feel like it is as dangerous like girlfriends related tattoo?

The key is that having been in this band…have been some of the best two years of my life so whatever happens i’m gonna cherish them.

You all are taking the decision of leaving your jobs to concentrate on the band full time. How do you feel about the future?

Petrified. We had a few tours in a row, this one and the last one, and we couldn’t get the time for work so it was just a case of having to leave our jobs, I mean we have no idea what’s gonna happen, we’ll see what happens in the future I guess, but for now it’s scary of course

You just came back from your first ever European tour, with such big bands, tell us some anecdotes about this experience.

We are the most boring band, so we don’t really have any. We broke down one day and we were stranded in Austia for a few days. Apart from that, we’re pretty like bed early haha, it was a great great tour.

Would you like to visit more EU countries next time?

We’d love to, we need to go to see some places.

Now we’ve got a bunch of more relaxed questions: Last summer we kept on telling people that Bukowski was THE summer song. If you had to choose one of your songs to be a real summer anthem, which one would it be?

That’s a tough one. Kelly Kapowski on the record is quite upbeat, I guess that one.

Do you think that the emo revival is really happening?

We never ever went away from it so, I’ve never stopped listening to these band and this music so I didn’t realise it went away. But I guess there are a few more bands at the moment.

Last but not least, here’s the question we ask every band we interview: What do you think about eggs?

Eggs? I had them this morning, I like them. We have a saying in this band like if something’s good we say ‘this is good as eggs’ or ‘it’s cold as eggs’ so we like ‘em.
