Il suono dell’irrequietezza – Interview with Indoor Pets

C’è chi nel tempo libero ascolta gli audiolibri e chi invece ascolta le band opener dei prossimi concerti di Hub Music Factory. Ecco perché dopo lo stupefacente incontro casuale con alcuni brani random degli Indoor Pets, supporto dell’unica data italiana degli Ash il 3 dicembre al Legend Club di Milano, ho deciso che valesse molto la pena intervistarli.

Ho quindi metaforicamente incontrato Jamie Glass, frontman della band, via email; gli ho chiesto delle cose e lui ha risposto come potete leggere qui sotto.

Ciao! Prima di tutto, come stai? E secondo di tutto, come descriveresti la band a qualcuno che non ne ha mai sentito parlare?

Jamie: Ciao. Sto alla grande. Ho appena mangiato la pasta e sono pieno. La band la descriverei così: siamo una pop band a cui piace fare musica da schiaffi in faccia.

Parliamo del vostro nuovo disco: ci avete messo un sacco di tempo a farlo, pensate di essere i Guns ‘n Roses per caso?

J: Ironicamente, l’avevamo quasi finito un bel po’ di tempo fa. Ma sono successe cose a caso che ci hanno costretti a rimandarne l’uscita. Abbiamo già scritto i prossimi 4 album in realtà.

Parliamo seriamente del vostro album, Be Content: segue un concept? Dicci qualcosa che pensi sia importante farci sapere prima dell’uscita…

J: È difficile fare un debut album seguendo già un concept perché è stato scritto nell’arco di diversi anni. Ma c’è un tema onnipresente, quello dell’irrequietezza, del desiderio di migliorare se stessi continuamente. Sto ancora cercando di chiarirmi le idee e questo album rappresenta la confusione che c’è nella mia testa mentre cerco di farlo.

Il vostro ultimo singolo, Being Strange, suona come una hit degli anni 90 (il che è positivo). Dimmi qualcosa in più sul sound della band e su come si evolve nel nuovo album.

J: L’album è pieno di momenti dinamici. Strofe sussurrate e muri di chitarre che travolgono l’ascoltatore. È tutto fuori posto ma abbiamo sempre voluto che la melodia dominasse nei ritornelli. Col passare degli anni il ritmo sarà anche rallentato, ma perché sapevamo di voler lasciare l’ascoltatore con un gusto ben preciso in bocca…

Avete firmato con Wichita, un’etichetta importante, quella di band come gli American Football e i Fidlar. Quanto è importante stare sulla giusta etichetta nel 2019, e come pensate possa aiutare la crescita della band?

J: L’etichetta è stata grandiosa con noi. Ci hanno lasciato fare quello in cui crediamo. Sentiamo un sacco di storie di etichette che prevaricano sulle band, che non capiscono gli artisti, ma per noi non è stato così. Wichita vuole che siamo noi stessi. Sono matti.

Credo che abbiamo parlato di abbastanza cose serie, quindi ora possiamo parlare di asciugamanini e cibo… Potete venire a suonare in Italia solo se rispondete correttamente a questa domanda: quando si mette la pasta nella pentola?

J: Allora, io faccio schifo a cucinare, ma direi che si mette quando l’acqua bolle. Ho la sensazione che sia una domanda a trabocchetto…

Ultimo, ma non meno importante: cosa ne pensi delle uova?

J: Sono vegano, quindi la mia opinione sulle uova è un po’ di parte. Credo abbiano una bella forma. Di che colore sono le uova in Italia? Mi manda a male quando non hanno il guscio rosa come nel Regno Unito.

Hello! First of all how are you? And secondly, how would you describe your band to someone who never heard of it?

J: Hi. We’re great. I’ve just had some pasta, I’m stuffed. We’re a pop band that like to make music that slaps you in the face.

Let’s talk about your upcoming album: it took you ages to make it, do you think you’re Guns ‘n Roses or something?

J: Ironically, we had pretty much finished it a while back. It was just behind the scene nonsense that led to it being pushed back. We’ve already written the next 4 albums.

Let’s seriously talk about the album, Be Content. Is there a concept behind it? Tell us some important things you think we should know about it before it comes out.

J: It’s hard to have a concept with debut albums as they are written over the space of a few years. But there is a constant theme of restlessness and the desire to better oneself throughout. I’m still trying to figure things out, and this album represent the noise in my head whilst doing so.

The latest single you released is Being Strange, and I would say it sounds a bit like it is a ’90s radio hit (which is great). Tell me more about the band’s sound and how it is going to evolve with the new album.

J: So the album is filled with dynamic moments. Whispering verses and walls of guitars swarming over the listener. It’s all over the place but we always wanted the melody to hit hard in the choruses. Over the years the tempo might have slowed with our songwriting but that was because we knew we wanted to leave more of a taste in the mouth.

You’ve signed to a very important label like Wichita, featuring some of our favourite bands like American Football and Fidlar. How important is it to be on the right label in 2019, and how do you expect the label will especially help your band grow?

J: The label has been great. They’ve let us really make an album campaign that we can believe in. We hear so many stories from fellow bands of labels taking over and not understanding the artist and we can’t relate. Wichita want us to be ourselves. They’re mad.

Guess we’ve talked about serious things enough, so now we’re gonna talk about tea towels and food, I suppose… you can come to Italy only if you can answer this question. You’re cooking pasta: when do you actually put pasta in the cooker?

J: I’m probably the worst when it comes to cooking. I want to say, put the pasta in when the water has boiled. I feel like this is a trick question.

Last but not least, this is a question we ask every band we interview: what do you think about eggs?

J: I’m vegan so my opinion of eggs is slightly warped. I think they’re a cool shape. What colour are the eggs in Italy? It freaks me out when they’re not pink shelled like in the UK.
