Gli A Wilhelm Scream sono in procinto di tornare in Italia per ben due date in accompagnamento al tour Pennywise + Sick of It All + Iron Reagan (3 luglio al Beky Bay di Bellaria Igea-Marina e 4 luglio al Carroponte di Sesto San Giovanni). Abbiamo scambiato due parole con Trevor Reilly, chitarrista e seconda voce della band!
Ciao, Trevor! State per tornare in Italia per un paio di show con Pennywise e Sick of It All a luglio; come vi sentite? E che cosa possiamo aspettarci da questi concerti?
Cavolo, sì! Amiamo l’Italia! E amiamo anche i Pennywise e i Sick of it All, quindi non vediamo l’ora di poter condividere il palco con loro di fronte ai fan italiani, che sono sempre stati tra i più chiassosi. I nostri fan possono aspettarsi di vederci lì, sorridenti e sudati come al solito.
Hai qualche ricordo interessante dei vostri concerti passati nel nostro paese?
Ricordo di quella volta che suonavamo a Cesena – credo che fosse Cesena – ero distrutto dall’influenza, ma sono sceso dalla mia cuccetta, sono salito sul palco, e dopo qualche pezzo e mi sentivo immediatamente come nuovo! Quel concerto è stato fantastico.
Ho sentito, all’inizio di quest’anno, che avete iniziato a lavorare al nuovo album e a buttare giù dei riff. Come sta andando?
Sta venendo sù alla grande! Abbiamo un sacco di materiale che stiamo mettendo a punto e perfezionando man mano che procediamo. Molto probabilmente avremo una buona fetta di materiale pronto per quando il nostro nuovo studio, che stiamo costruendo, sarà diventato operativo.
Ci sono cantautori o scrittori che vi ispirano più di altri durante il processo di scrittura?
Blake dei Jawbreaker / Jets to Brazil è uno dei miei parolieri preferiti di sempre. Poi Brett Gurewitz dei Bad Religion… quell’uomo è in grado di scrivere canzoni hardcore davvero orecchiabili, e i Propagandhi, autori di pezzi incredibili. Ma potrei andare avanti all’infinito. Per quanto riguarda invece la parte musicale, ci sono i Periphery che mi stanno ispirando molto.
Voi arrivate dalla zona di Boston. Come sono cambiate le cose rispetto ai primi tempi in cui suonavate e quali sono stati i momenti che hanno segnato la vostra carriera?
Beh, alla fine non abbiamo mai fatto parte della scena di Boston a tutti gli effetti; abbiamo avuto la nostra scena musicale a New Bedford, che in quel momento era molto attiva. Si potevano facilmente riempire dei locali con 500 persone in poco tempo e ne uscivano fuori delle serate fantastiche. Detto questo, abbiamo fatto degli spettacoli incredibili a Boston nel corso degli anni; è divertente vedere molte facce note dei nostri concerti locali che ci seguono anche fino in altre città. È come se avessimo portato un po’ di New Bedford con noi ovunque, sai? In un certo senso le cose non sono mai cambiate per noi. Non abbiamo mai fatto parte del club di quelli alla moda allora e non ne faremo mai parte, ma questo ci va benissimo. Siamo fortunati ad avere un pubblico fedele che ci aiuta a portare la festa ovunque andiamo.
Perché avete deciso di cambiare il nome della band in A Wilhelm Scream da Smackin’ Isaiah? E suonate ancora, a volte, i vecchi pezzi degli Smackin’ Isaiah live?
Era tempo di fermarsi con gli Smackin’ Isaiah. Un membro fondatore stava lasciando la band e dunque ci sembrava opportuno cambiare nome, passando comunque ad un altro nome che fosse ugualmente cattivo! Suoniamo ancora alcune canzoni quando la gente ce le chiede, soprattutto quando torniamo a suonare dalle nostre parti. Abbiamo appena messo tutte le tracce non masterizzate degli Smackin’ Isaiah insieme ad alcune altre di alcune vecchie band e verranno rimasterizzate e rilasciate in digitale molto presto, quindi tenete d’occhio i nostri umili inizi!
E per quanto riguarda i concerti, quali sono alcuni artisti / gruppi che hanno maggiormente influenzato la vostra band e il vostro modo di suonare?
Molte band hardcore che venivano a suonare nella nostra città e nella nostra scena in generale hanno avuto un’influenza molto grande su di noi, specialmente per quanto riguarda l’interazione con la folla. Gruppi musicali come gli Hot Water Music venivano a suonare in piccole sale da 50 posti e le distruggevano. Ma anche Ink and Dagger, Bane, Grade, Six Going on Seven, All Chrome, Grey Area; abbiamo suonato con tutte queste band da giovani e quello che ci hanno trasmesso è la voglia di voler vedere la folla esplodere. Penso che questo abbia avuto una grande influenza su di noi e su quello che facciamo. Per quanto riguarda invece l’abilità musicale, quando penso a una band che sul palco spacca e dà tutto, per prima cosa penso ai Propagandhi ma anche ai Descendents, che per noi sono una grande fonte di ispirazione. So quanto hanno lavorato duramente i Descendents per essere la band che sono, anche al giorno d’oggi. Hanno dei ritmi di lavoro folli e li stimiamo troppo per questo.
Qual è la tua canzone preferita da suonare dal vivo?
Alla fine qualunque siano le canzoni che piacciono al pubblico. Io vado fuori copione con i miei riff ogni sera per mantenere le cose interessanti per me, ma mi diverto a suonarle tutte, quindi è piuttosto difficile scegliere!
Quale pensi che sia la principale differenza tra i vostri concerti negli Stati Uniti e quelli in Europa?
Quando abbiamo iniziato a suonare in Europa, gli show sono migliorati per noi, la gente ci apprezzava perché eravamo venuti fino nelle loro città, al contrario degli Stati Uniti, dove era diventato piuttosto difficile suonare per noi, in particolare per il tipo di musica che facciamo. Abbiamo visto così tante tendenze e generi andare e venire nel corso degli anni in America quindi ci siamo buttati sull’Europa e ci tornavamo un qualcosa come tre volte all’anno! Così facendo, le persone negli Stati Uniti hanno iniziato ad apprezzarci di più perché non ci vedevano più tanto spesso, quindi negli ultimi anni le differenze si sono pareggiate. Ora vedremo come andrà questo tour estivo, forse l’Europa tornerà a fare da protagonista!
Ultima domanda, ma prima di tutto grazie per il tuo tempo e per far parte di una delle band più sincere della scena: che progetti avete dopo questo tour estivo?
Grazie! Stiamo cercando di costruire un nuovo studio tutto per noi e al nostro ritorno ci concentreremo su quello ma ci daremo dentro anche per metterci a tirare le somme di tutte queste idee che stiamo accumulando e vedere in che modo finiranno nel nostro prossimo capitolo musicale. Abbiamo anche un sacco di date con i Descendents in diverse parti degli Stati Uniti di cui siamo davvero entusiasti. Ma prima, l’Italia! Non vedo l’ora di fare casino con tutti voi! Che figata, porco Dio!

You’re coming back to Italy for a couple of shows with Pennywise and Sick of It All in July, are you excited to come back? What can we expect from your live shows this time?
Hell yeah! We love Italy! And we also love Pennywise and Sick of It All, so we are beyond stoked to be able to share the stage with those guys in front of the Italian fans, who have always been among the most rowdy. AWS fans can expect us to be there smiling and sweating as usual.
Do you have any cool memories from your past shows in Italy?
I remember one time playing Cesena (I believe it was), I was crazy sick with the flu, rolled out of my bunk, onto the stage, played a few jams and instantly felt like a million bucks. That gig was awesome.
I heard, earlier this year, that you guys were compiling riffs for a new album. How is that coming along?
Coming along great! We have a lot of material that we are fine tuning and making up more as we go along. I think we will probably have a good chunk of material ready for when our new studio is built and operational.
Are there any songwriters or writers that you look up to?
Blake from Jawbreaker/Jets to Brazil is one of my favourite lyricists ever. For crazy riffage I’ve been really digging the band Periphery. Brett Gurewitz from Bad Religion, man, that guy writes some really catchy hardcore songs. Propagandhi, consistently amazing songwriters. I could probably go on and on.
You guys started out around the Boston area. How have things changed from the earlier days and which are the moments that stand out to you throughout your career?
Well, we were never really a part of the Boston scene really starting out; we had our own music scene in New Bedford, which was really hopping at that time. You could easily get 500 kids jammed into a rental hall and have a sick time on fairly short notice. Having said that, we have had amazing shows in Boston over the years, it’s funny you see a lot of the same faces that would be at our local shows following us up to these places, so it’s like we brought a bit of New Bedford with us everywhere, ya know? In some ways things haven’t really changed. We never were part of the cool kids club then, and never will be now, and that’s totally fine with us. We are lucky to have a loyal following that helps us bring the party to wherever we go.
Why did you decide to change the band’s name from Smackin’ Isaiah? Do you still play songs from your Smackin’ Isaiah days?
It was time to put Smackin’ Isaiah to rest. A founding member was leaving the band at that time, and it seems like a god opportunity to trade one bad band name for another! We still play a few songs when people demand it, mostly at tlocal shows really. We just found all of the unmastered SI tracks along with a few other old bands that we will remaster and release digitally soon, so keep an eye out for that, our humble beginnings!
And as for the live shows, what are some artists/bands that have had an influence on the band and on the way you play music?
A lot of hardcore bands would play our hometown, and the scene in general was a pretty big influence on us, the crowd interaction especially. Bands like Hot Water Music would roll through and play a tiny 50 capacity venue and it would just go off. Ink and Dagger, Bane, Grade, Six Going on Seven, All Chrome, Grey Area; we would play with these bands when we were kids. Just seeing the crowds go off. That interaction stays with you. I think that had a big influence on what we would do. As far as chops, like a band just killing it and pulling everything off, Propagandhi comes to mind first. Descendents as well, just a huge influence. I know how hard deescendents work at their craft, even to this day. Their practice regimen is insane and that is inspirational to me.
What’s your favourite song to play live?
Whichever one the crowd digs the most gets the edge for me. I go off script with my riff age every night here and there to keep things interesting for myself, so I have fun playing them all, so it’s kinda hard to choose!
What do you think is the main difference between your shows in the US and those in Europe?
When we first started coming out to Europe the shows were so much better for us, people really appreciated us being there as opposed to the states, which has become pretty hard for us, particularly with the type of music we make. We’ve seen so many trends and genres come and go over the years. So we just kept going to Europe like three times a year! When we did that, people in the states started to appreciate us more because we were never there, so I think it’s started to kind of even out in recent years. We’ll see how this summer tour goes, maybe Europe will once again take the lead!
Last question, so first of all thank you for your time and for being one of the most sincere bands in the scene. What are you plans after this summer tour?
Thank you! We will hopefully be ready to build the new studio when we get back, and get ourselves in there to hammer out all these ideas we have been stockpiling and see what the next musical chapter is gonna sound like for us! We also have a bunch of tour dates with he Descendents in different parts of the US that we are very excited to be a part of. But first, Italy! Can’t wait to rock with al of you!
