I Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! tornavano in Italia dopo due anni di assenza e in occasione della data di Parma, oltre ad averci offerto cibo e alcool, ci hanno regalato quest’intervista.
Mandate i bambini a nanna che si parla di droga, donne e cose violente.
A parte gli scherzi (mica tanto) ecco qui cosa ci hanno raccontato! Have fun.

Prima di tutto, come state? Siete contenti di essere tornati in Italia?

Bert: Siamo davvero molto felici, siamo molto molto contenti di stare in Italia ancora, sono passati due anni! Dovevamo suonare in Italia due anni fa.
Eric: Con i New Found Glory!
Bert: Si, devo spiegare cos’è successo. Eravamo nel pieno di questo tour con i New Found Glory, abbiamo suonato a tutte le date tedesche, tutto andava bene ed eravamo eccitati per la fine del tour con le date in Italia e Spagna, perché sapevamo che l’Italia sarebbe stata incredibile. Non avevamo mai suonato in Spagna ma sapevamo di avere un’ottima fanbase lì. Insomma, prima di entrare in Italia, ancora in Germania quindi, siamo stati fermati dalla polizia e ci hanno detto che il nostro van era troppo pesante. E noi abbiamo chiesto tipo “cosa possiamo fare? Dobbiamo pagare qualcosa…?”, ma no, ci hanno detto che non potevamo andare oltre. Cosa potevamo fare quindi? Perché sapete, eravamo in autostrada, faceva freddo, tutto era orribile e abbiamo dovuto lasciare a piedi delle persone. Non potevamo lasciare l’attrezzatura per strada quindi abbiamo dovuto lasciare giù delle persone e l’unica scelta era tornare a casa. È una storia incredibile, solo sfortuna e uno strano poliziotto tedesco. Volevamo rimediare e siamo davvero felici di suonare a queste due date in Italia perché è stato un vero peccato non aver suonato con i New Found Glory qui.

In aprile siete stati in tour in Sud America per la prima volta. Raccontateci qualcosa di quest’esperienza. Qualcosa che avete imparato riguardo la cultura, l’atmosfera ai live durante il set. E ovviamente, ci sono stati momenti particolarmente divertenti durante il tour?

Bert: Il Sud America è stato fantastico! È assurdo, è una parte del mondo in cui tutti noi volevamo andare. I live sono andati molto bene e anche il resto ma anche solo esserci, in quella parte del mondo, è stato bellissimo. Tu cos’hai imparato in Sud America Mathias?
Mathias: Posso dire tutto? Ok, ho preso alcune droghe sintetiche, mi sono svegliato malissimo e questo è tutto. (risate)
Eric: No, lui non ricorda!
Mathias: Colombia… ragazze stupende! Argentina… bellissime ragazze, un sacco di bellissime ragazze si. Ottimi live.
Bert: È stato un buon tour, penso che il nostro stato preferito sia stato l’Argentina. Buenos Aires è bellissima, molto europea, assomiglia a Parigi e lì viene chiamata “La Parigi del Sud America”. Siamo anche riusciti a visitare un po’ Rio de Janeiro. È stato stancante e in Colombia una cosa mi ha davvero colto di sorpresa. Abbiamo suonato a Bogotà e non sapevamo che Bogotà è molto in alto, circa 2500 metri sopra il livello del mare. Quindi abbiamo iniziato a suonare e non riuscivamo a respirare. Non ce l’aspettavamo, non avevo mai provato una cosa del genere prima e tutti dopo lo show mi hanno detto che succedeva a causa dell’altitudine. Dopo qualcuno mi ha detto “si dovresti prendere della cocaina!” e io ero tipo “si… ok….”.

“Get Lost, Find Yourself” è stato rilasciato il 18 Maggio 2015 via Fearless Records. Com’è andata la promozione?

Eric: Non possiamo darvi molti dettagli ma ci sono stati alcuni problemi alla Fearless Records in questo periodo e alcune persone, ad esempio il ragazzo che si occupava della promozione dei nostri dischi, hanno lasciato l’azienda.
Bert: In ogni caso, penso sia un buon disco, siamo molto orgogliosi. Vorrei solo che fosse stato spinto un po’ di più ma il feedback è stato molto buono. Inoltre stiamo per rilasciare un nuovo music video per Set It Straight in questi giorni e penso che dopo l’estate sarà ora di cominciare a scrivere il nuovo disco.
Ha comunque riff pesanti, il sound pesante e le melodie catchy dei vostri precedenti lavori, ma suona più naturale.

In cosa pensate quest’album si differenzi dai vostri precedenti lavori?

Bert: Quello era il piano, farlo suonare più naturale. Volevamo provare qualcos’altro. Penso che “Pardon My French” suoni molto bene ma volevamo provare qualcosa di diverso e in questo senso il titolo dell’album è azzeccato. Abbiamo pensato “ok, abbiamo fatto questo disco, ora dobbiamo perderci nel prossimo processo di creazione del nuovo disco e provare qualcosa di diverso”. È stato molto interessante. Il produttore con cui abbiamo lavorato per questo disco era un po’ matto. Alla fine del lavoro, sentivamo di essere cresciuti artisticamente. Lui è un ragazzo totalmente diverso da Joey Sturgis, ma penso che tutti i produttori sono matti.
Eric: Ho sentito che gli Hit The Lights, mentre registravano con questo produttore a volte si alzavano, buttavano le chitarre e lasciavano lo studio perché è molto difficile lavorare con Kyle Black, devi trovare un compromesso ed è molto stancante. Ma è un grande produttore e Get Lost, Find Yourself suona davvero bene!

Dal vostro punto di vista, qual è il significato di “Get Lost, Find Yourself”?

Bert: Penso che Pardon My French sia un album che ha soddisfatto a pieno tutta la band e tutti pensavamo che non avremmo potuto andare oltre in quella direzione. Non avrebbe avuto senso fare un “Pardon My French n.2”. Ho cominciato a scrivere canzoni ma assomigliavano a quelle del disco precedente, non aveva senso. Era necessario provare qualcosa di nuovo. Abbiamo scritto alcune canzoni con alcuni produttori negli Stati Uniti, che è una cosa che non avrei mai pensato di fare perché io voglio scrivere i miei pezzi da solo, non con altre persone, questa è la nostra band. Ma lo abbiamo fatto ed è stata un’esperienza davvero ottima. Quindi si, pensavamo che era tempo di provare qualcosa di differente quindi ci siamo persi per trovare noi stessi.

C’è qualche band underground che state attualmente ascoltando? Qual è il vostro release preferito di quest’anno finora?

Bastien: Issues. L’album degli Issues è davvero buono, piace a tutti noi.
Eric: Thrice!
Bert: Oh si il nuovo disco dei Thrice è pazzesco!
Eric: Iron Maiden? (risate)
Bert: Abbiamo visto il loro aereo! Eravamo in aeroporto a Parigi e abbiamo visto l’aereo degli Iron Maiden!
Eric: Perché il cantante è un pilota e ha comprato un Boeing!
Bert: Tutti gli aerei erano Airfrance, Easyjet… e poi c’era questo grandissimo aereo con un grosso teschio e “Iron Maiden” scritto sopra, assurdo!

Due anni fa ci avete detto che non c’era una vera scena in Francia. Pensate che la scena francese sia cresciuta in questi due anni? Ci sono state band/artisti che hanno catturato la nostra attenzione ultimamente?
Bert: Penso che la Francia abbia band, molti talenti, ma nessun modo per coltivarli. Niente label e neanche strutture.
Eric: E poi il pubblico francese è strano. Per esempio con band come Bring Me The Horizon o Pvris ogni venue è sold out in Francia, ma ad esempio i Neck Deep suonano davanti a 50 persone. Ci sono poche band che vanno davvero forte in Francia, una su dieci. Bring Me The Horizon, Pvris, All Time Low… e questo è tutto. Tutte le altre band non vanno forte e infatti odiano la Francia. (risate)
Eric: Abbiamo alcune band che lavorano duro, come i Back Garden Light, sono bravi, è ottimo per la Francia, hanno passione.
Bert: Charles Like The Prince è sotto una label decente, non enorme ma decente. Sta andando bene, le sue canzoni passano in radio, è figo.

Possiamo aspettarci un acoustic session o un Ep acustico dai Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! prima o poi?
Bert: Potremmo farlo, sapete che in ogni disco abbiamo messo una traccia acustica ma non è il nostro stile. In Sud America ci hanno chiesto di suonare un set acustico e hanno spinto molto per convincerci ma abbiamo detto di no perché richiede molta preparazione e non penso che potremmo suonare le nostre canzoni con una chitarra acustica. Sono molto “riffose”. Serve davvero molto tempo per preparare un set acustico.
Ok, passiamo a qualche domanda più leggera! Con quale artista donna vorreste fare un featuring?
Eric: Jeffree Star? (risate)
Bert: Non credo sia una donna! Carlotta mi odierà per questo ma in Pardon My French avremmo dovuto fare un featuring con Jenna McDougall. La nostra label le ha chiesto di cantare in un pezzo ma lei ha detto “non voglio cantare in questa canzone, voglio cantare in quest’altra! e la label le ha detto di no, tutto qui!
Penso che volesse cantare in “Between Your Lines” ma le ho detto che avrebbe dovuto cantare in “So Close And Yet So Far” che è un pezzo soft. Ma c’è stato questo problema con la label e quindi niente, non importa.

Se la vostra vita fosse un film, quale sarebbe e perché?

Eric: “Il quinto elemento!” per me. È la mia vita. Avete visto il film? No? Non avete visto “Il quinto elemento”? Cosa?? Dovete! Per forza!!
Bert: È un film francese ma sembra molto americano.
Eric: Il miglior film del pianeta!
Mathias: “Irreversible” per me. È un film francese. Parla di un ragazzo che cerca l’uomo che ha stuprato la sua ragazza e vuole ucciderlo. È un film molto violento. C’è violenza, amore, odio… è un buon film!
Bastien: Lords Of Dogtown!

Qual è il peggior regalo che avete ricevuto?

Eric: Io so il mio. Una ragazza ha fatto uno strano collage di me e Bert mentre ci coccoliamo, l’ha stampato e ce l’ha dato dicendo “questo è per voi!!” e io ho detto “woooow” ma è stato fottutamente strano.

Questa è l’ultima domanda, ed è molto seria. Qual è il vostro Pokémon preferito?

Bert: Conoscete quello che prende le sembianze di altri Pokémon… no no aspettate! No! È Rondoudou (Jigglypuff).
Eric: Mais oui! C’est vrai! (Ma si! È vero!)

English Version

First of all, how are you? Are you happy to be back in Italy?

Bert: We’re very very happy, siamo molto molto contenti di stare in Italia ancora, it’s been two years, we were supposed to play in Italia two years ago.
Eric: With New Found Glory!
Bert: Yeah, so I have to explain what happened. We were on that tour with New Found Glory, we played all the shows in Germany, everything was fine, and we were so excited for the end of the tour: Italy and Spain. Because we knew that Italy will be amazing and we had never played in Spain but we knew that we have a good fanbase there. So, right before entering in Italy, still in Germany, we were stopped by a police car and they told us that our van was too heavy. So, we’re like “what could we do? Do we have to pay something…?”, but no, they said “you can’t drive any further”. So we’re like “ok what do we do?” because you know, we’re on the highway, it was cold and everything is terrible and we had to “drop people”, we couldn’t drop the gear on the road, so we had to drop people and the only choice was to go back home because we were not allowed to drive any further with the van. That’s an insane story, just bad luck, just a weird german cop. So yeah we really want to make that up and we’re very very glad to play these shows in Italy because we knew that it was a shame that we couldn’t play with New Found Glory here.

In April you went on tour in South America for the very first time. Tell us something about this experience. Something that you’ve learned about the culture, the atmosphere in the crowd during your set. And obviously have there been any funny moments on the tour so far?

Bert: Yeah, South America was great! It’s amazing, it’s one part of the world that we all really wanted to go to. The shows were great and everything was great but just to be there, in that part of the world, was just amazing. So, what did you learn Mathias in South America?
Mathias: Can I really say everything? Ok, I took some synthetic drugs, I woke up so bad and that’s all.  (laughs)
Eric: No, he doesn’t remember!
Mathias: Colombia… very beautiful girls! Argentina… beautiful girls, a lot of beautiful girls yeah. Good shows.
Bert: That was a good tour, I think our favourite country was Argentina, Buenos Aires was great, it was very European, it looks like Paris and they call it “Paris of South America”. It was great, we were also able to visit a little bit Rio de Janeiro. It was exhausting and the thing that really surprised me was Colombia. We played in Bogotà and what we didn’t know is that Bogotà is very high. It’s like 2500 metres above sea level. So we started to play and we couldn’t breath. We didn’t expect that, I’ve never experienced that kind of stuff before and everyone after the shows told me that it’s because of the height. After that someone told me “yeah you should have taken some cocaine!” and I’m like “yeah… ok…”

So, “Get Lost, Find Yourself” was released on 18 May 2015 via Fearless Records. How did the promotion go?

Eric: We can’t give you too many details but there was some little problems in Fearless Records and some people moved out of the Company, for example the one who was responsible for the promotion of our records.
Bert: Anyway, I think it’s a good record, we’re very proud of it. I just wish this could have been pushed a little bit more but the feedback was very good.
Anyway, we’re gonna released a new music video for Set It Straight in these days and I think that after this summer it’s time to write another record.

It still has heavy riffs, the heavy sound and the catchy melodies of your early works, but it sounds more natural. How do you think this album differs from your previous records?

Bert: That was the plan, to make it sound more natural. We wanted to try something else. I think “Pardon My French” sounds really good but we wanted to try something different and the title of the album goes with it. It was like “ok, we did this and now we’re gonna get lost in the next process to make an album and try something different”. It was very interesting. The producer we had for this record was kind of crazy. At the end of the process we felt like we had grown artistically. He was a completely different guy from Joey Sturgis, so I don’t know, I feel like producers are all kind of crazy.
Eric: I’ve heard that Hit The Lights, when they were recording with this producer sometimes got up, dropped the guitars and left the studio because it’s very hard to work with Kyle Black, you have to deal with him and it was very exhausting but he’s a great producer and Get Lost, Find Yourself sounds so good.

From your point of view, what’s the meaning of “Get Lost, Find Yourself”?
Bert: I feel like Pardon My French was an album that made our band complete and we think we couldn’t go any further in that direction. It wouldn’t make sense to make “Pardon My French n.2”. I was starting to write songs but it sounded like the previous record, it doesn’t make sense. It was necessary for the band to try something new. We wrote some songs with some producers in the US which is something that I didn’t really believe I was doing because I wanna write my own songs, I don’t want to write them with some other people, this is our band. But then, we did this and it was a good experience so yeah, we think that it was time for the band to try something different so we got lost to find ourselves.

Is there any underground band that you are currently listening to? And what are your favourite releases of the year so far?

Bastien: Issues. The Issues album is pretty good, I mean we all like it.
Eric: Thrice!
Bert: Oh yeah the Thrice new album is fucking amazing.
Eric: Iron Maiden? (laughs)
Bert: We saw their airplane! We went to the airport in Paris and we saw the Iron Maiden plane!
Eric: Because the singer is a pilot and he bought his own Boeing!
Bert: All the planes are Airfrance, Easyjet…and there was a big plane with a big skull and “Iron Maiden” written on it, that’s crazy!

Two years ago you told us that there wasn’t really a scene in France. Do you think that the scene in France has grown more over these two years? There are some bands/artists that got our attention from there recently.
Bert: I think France has bands, France has some good talents but no way to make them grow up. No labels, no structures.
Eric: And the french crowd is very weird. For example we have some bands like Bring Me The Horizon or Pvris that sold out every venue in France, but some like Neck Deep play for fifty people in the room. And so, there are few bands that are still doing great in France but it’s one out of ten. We have Bring Me The Horizon, Pvris, All Time Low… and that’s all. All the other bands are doing bad and they hate France. (laughs)
Eric: We have some bands that are working hard like Back Garden Light, they’re good, it’s good for France, they’re passionate.
Bert: Charles Like The Prince is under a decent label, not a big label but a decent one. He’s doing well right now, his songs are being played on the radio, that’s cool.

Can we expect an acoustic session or an acoustic EP from Chunk! No, Captain Chunk! sooner or later?

Bert: We could do it, you know in every record we put an acoustic song but this is not really our style. In South America we were asked to play an acoustic set, and they really pushed for it but we said no because it requires a lot of preparation and i think we can’t play our songs with an acoustic guitar. Because they’re very riffy. I think it takes a lot of time to prepare an acoustic set.
Ok, let’s be soft! Which female artist would you like to feature in one of your songs?
Eric: Jeffree Star? (laughs)
Bert: I don’t think he’s a female! I think Carlotta is gonna hate me for that but in Pardon My French we were supposed to have Jenna McDougall singing on it. I think the label asked her to sing on one song but she was like “no I don’t wanna be on this song, I wanna be on another one!” and the label told her “no”, that’s all!
I think she wanted to sing in “Between Your Lines” and I told her “no you’re gonna sing on “So Close And Yet So Far” which is a soft song. But there was this label problem and whatever.

If your life was a movie, which one would it be and why?

Eric: “The Fifth Element” for me. It’s just like my life. Have you seen the movie? No? You have not seen “The Fifth Element”? What?? You have to! Of course!
Bert: It’s a french movie but it’s very american!
Eric: It’s the best film on Earth!
Mathias: “Irreversible” for me. It’s a french movie. It’s about a guy who’s looking for the man who raped his girlfriend and he wants to kill him. It’s a very violent movie. There’s violence, love, hate… it’s a good movie.

What is the worst present you’ve ever received?

Eric: I know mine. A girl made a weird photoshop collage of me and Bert cuddling together and she printed it and she was like “this is for you!” and I was like “woooow” but it’s fucking weird.
This is the last question and it’s really serious. What’s your favourite Pokémon?
Bert: You know the one which takes the same shape of other Pokémon… no no! No! It’s Rondoudou (Jigglypuff)
Eric: Mais oui! C’est vrai!
