In questo uggioso mese di Marzo, Trivel ha pensato bene di organizzare un tour tutto italiano per promuovere quello che è il progetto solista di Thom Weeks, cantante e chitarrista dei Gnarwolves, band che avrete assolutamente sentito nominare di questi ultimi tempi. Si chiama “George” il secondo disco di inediti auto-prodotto da questo ragazzo che non riesce a stare fermo un attimo e che durante tutte queste date è accompagnato su è giù per l’Italia dal buon Samall (Slander, Trivel, Venezia Hardcore) per mezzo del suo MaleDucato. 
Studiando a Bolzano è stato molto divertente pensare di poter assistere a un concerto così intimo ma allo stesso tempo molto apprezzabile e lasciatemi dire, decisamente inusueto per le zone alto-atesine, ospitato dal gentilissimo David di Krampus MGMT che ha reso possibile un house show coi fiocchi in cui ad aprire le danze ci sono state due band che hanno proposto pezzi in acustico e un “ragazzo” solista. Seduti per bene su divani e tappeti abbiamo ascoltato un bel set di Thom che ha suonato sia canzoni tratte da “George” (come la bellissima “Autobahn“) che varie canzoni dei Gnarwolves (come “Bottle to Bottle” e “High On a Wire“) che dopo qualche tentativo decisamente stonato di sing-along da parte mia, molti dei ragazzi si sono messi a cantare. Lo show si conclude alle 11 e 30 con “Smoking Kills”, vuoi per la paura di dar fastidio ai vicini, vuoi perchè forse dovevano tornare i genitori di David (ehi, che cazzo ne so), decidiamo di dirigerci in una sala prove usata da alcuni ragazzi di Krampus ricoperta di volti di Angela Lansbury non troppo rassicuranti. Tralasciando attività poco legali da wasted youth e piselli volanti di Luciano deiFlowers & Shelters (una delle band che aveva suonato quella sera), si è creata un’atmosfera molto chill e divertente dove ho sfoderato tutte le hit che so strimpellare a malapena con la chitarra classica tipo Linoleum dei NOFX o canzoni che credevo di sapere tipo Plane Vs. Tank Vs. Submarine ma di cui Thom mi ha insegnato i giusti accordi (grazie dude) e niente dopo averci dato appuntamento al lunedì seguente e aver detto buonanotte ai ragazzi che avrebbero dormito lì, verso le 3 mi dirigo a casa con i Flowers & Shelters facendomi strada in una Bolzano coperta di neve.
Due giorni dopo mi dirigo al Greenrecords Shop di Mestre dove Samall mi avverte con piacere che sono arrivate le copie fisiche di “George” (packaging super DIY, ottimo lavoro). Dopo aver salutato gli amici di sempre e altra bella gente parlo due minuti con Thom che mi dice di essersi divertito ad aver suonato in un ristorante a Mantova e effettivamente la cosa bella degli acoustic show sono proprio le venue insolite come del resto anche quella dove avrebbe suonato di lì a poco (uno skateshop). Sulle 6 e 30 noi abbiamo gia preso qualche birrino offerto dai gentilissimi di Greenrecords e ci prepariamo, chi seduto per terra e chi in piedi, ad ascoltare l’acoustic show.
Il repertorio di questa volta è molto vario, ci vengono suonate canzoni dell’ultimo album solista ma anche canzoni del primo EP e del Self Titled dei Gnarwolves e una traccia inedita che (forse?) farà parte del nuovo repertorio della band e di cui Thom dopo aver detto di averla suonata per metà a Milano per un lapsus improvviso mi fa notare che questa volta e il sabato precedente sono state le prime volte in cui l ha suonata per intero (ma in fondo è il bello della diretta no?). Nonostante io non sia ancora riuscito ad ascoltare molto “George” sin dalle prime note riconosco “Benzo Blues” e sono davvero contento di poterla sentire abbracciato alla mia ragazza e con in mano una birra fresca. Alla richiesta di un suggerimento io propongo “Boneyard” che non è proprio la canzone perfetta da suonare in acustico perciò Samall propone “Hate Me” che è un po’ strana resa così però noi la cantiamo super contenti comunque. Il concerto finisce con una proposta segreta fatta precedentemente da Cristiano di Greenrecords: si tratta di “Holiday” dei Get Up Kids e non c’era davvero modo migliore di finire, infatti i feels sono talmente tanti che al secondo ritornello una corda si rompe facendo concludere il set. I ragazzi mi chiedono di proseguire la serata nella saletta prove dei Danny Trejo ma io alle 5 meno un quarto del giorno dopo devo svegliarmi per prendere il treno per tornare a Bolzano e la valigia non si prepara da sola (sono la solita fighetta). La cosa più bella di questi due giorni è stata vedere tante facce sorridenti, abbracci e risate; è stata sentire un ragazzo il quale stimo molto suonare le sue canzoni e farlo nel modo più onesto possibile, è stata sentirmi dire che un’offerta libera poteva bastare perchè portare in giro la propria “arte” se fatto con passione va aldilà dei soldi, pur comprendendo che girare un paese con solo una chitarra in spalla non si può fare certo gratis. Non sapevo ogni singola canzone a memoria, non ho dei suoi poster attaccati in camera, non mi porto sempre dietro una sua foto sullo sfondo del telefono, ma sono sicuro che questi due giorni me li porterò sempre dentro e ne avrò sempre un bel ricordo.

March is a gloomy month, therefore Trivel thought it would be nice to promote an Italian tour for the solo project of Thom Weeks. He sings and plays guitar in Gnarwolves, a band you’ve probably already heard of in the last couple of years. The album is called “George” and it’s the second DIY album produced by this guy who can’t even stand still for a second, in fact he decided to play in a lot of cities with the support of our own good fella Samall (Slander, Trivel, Venezia Hardcore) and his MaleDucato (his van).
I study in Bolzano so it was significant for me to have him here for a show because, let me be honest, things like that don’t happen very often in Bolzano.
The show was hosted by David from Krampus MGMT. He let this really cool show happen and called some opening acts straight from Bolzano: there were like two bands that played acoustic songs and a “boy” with his solo project.
We enjoyed Thom’s nice set from some sofas or sitting on the carpet and he played songs both from his album “George” and some Gnarwolves tunes, like “Bottle to Bottle” and “High on a Wire”.
It took me a little while but I eventually got us all to sing along to his songs and it turned out a very nice thing to hear. The show unfortunately ended at 11.30 pm., maybe because of the neighbors, maybe because of David’s parents (shit, guys, I don’t really know why) but it went out in style with “Smoking Kills”.
At midnight we decided to continue the party in a rehearsal room full of Angela Lansbury’s faces (pretty creepy imo) where we indulged in some barely legal activities and one of them was Luciano’s flying dick ( he’s a guy that play guitar in Flowers & Shelters, one of the opening bands we saw that night) but the atmosphere was pretty chill so I started to play, with my guitar, all the hits I know like NOFX’s Linoleum and also the songs I thought I knew how to play like Plane vs. Tank vs. Submarine by Tigers Jaw (thanks for teaching me the right chords Thom), then, after saying goodnight I went home at 3 am with the guys in Flowers & Shelters, walking through a Bolzano covered with snow.
Two days later I went to Greenrecords shop in Mestre where Samall told me that the physical copies of “George” were available (super DIY packaging, good job). So, after giving a bunch of high fives to all my friends, I talked for a few minutes to Thom before the show: he told me that the night before he played in a really cool restaurant in Mantova and I think this is the coolest thing about house shows because you can play in weird venues and have lots of fun. And by the way, that night, in Mestre, he was going to play in a skateshop.
It was 6.30 pm and we already had some beers (offered by the kind guys of Greenrecords) which got us pumped for the show. Most of us were sitting on the floor, drinking beers and chilling ourselves out when the show started.
The setlist was really various and included songs from the solo album and songs from Gnarwolves’ early works, their self-titled album and even an unreleased song. This song was played entirely for the first time in Bolzano and Mestre because Thom told me he fucked it up in Milan cause he forgot the second verse (but hey that’s the nice thing of playing live right?); and by the way, no one knew about the mistake because it was a new song lol.
Even if I didn’t know well the album “George”, I recognized “Benzo Blues” and I was happy when I heard it while I was hugging my girlfriend and drinking a fresh beer.
Thom asked me which Gnarwolves song I wanted to hear, I said “Boneyard” but it’s not that easy to express in acoustic so Samall suggested “Hate me”, which it was great.
The most amazing thing about these two shows was seeing a lot of smiles, hugs and laughs; it was very special for me to spend these days with a guy whom I really appreciate because he plays his songs in the most honest way; and he just wanted “a free-offer” because what he cares about is the music, his passion for it and not the money even though we were all conscious that he couldn’t travel for free.
I didn’t know every single song by heart, I don’t have any posters of Thom on my wall, I don’t even have his picture as a wallpaper on my phone but I’m pretty sure that these two days will be carved in my heart forever. Peace xx
