Interview with Trophy Eyes

Non troppo tempo fa i Trophy Eyes sono passati di nuovo a far visita in Italia, ovviamente noi non potevamo farci scappare l’occasione per fare una bella intervista. Abbiamo fatto quattro chiacchiere con il cantante John ed ecco qua cosa ci ha detto!

Mend, Move On è uscito un anno fa. Puoi riassumerci ciò che è successo per voi da allora?
E’ stato un album solido, penso. Siamo subito andati in tour giù da noi, c’era in generale una buona ricezione, sembrava piacere a tutti. Siamo andati in Europa e nel Regno Unito presto, poi negli Stati Uniti e ora siamo qui di nuovo. Ci sta tenendo molto occupati e ne siamo orgogliosi.

C’è una ragione per cui avete scelto solo due singoli dall’album?
Non proprio. Non so cosa sia la normalità, ma abbiamo semplicemente scelto i due che pensavamo fossero più “da singolo” e li abbiamo rilasciati con due video.

Se potessi tornare indietro ad un anno fa, cosa avresti fatto diversamente per quanto riguarda l’album e la promozione dell’album?
Passerei molto più tempo a scriverlo. Credo che qualsiasi artista, appena finisce di registrare, torni a risentirlo e pensi “ah, cazzo, vorrei poter tornare indietro e cambiare questo”. Mi prenderei molto più tempo e mi piacerebbe fare qualcosa di diverso perché… le band rilasciano un video musicale, creano dell’hype per l’album, ed è una cosa vista e rivista, un processo molto vecchio, vorrei tornare indietro e pensare ad una maniera più innovativa di presentarlo.

Avete pubblicato recentemente il b-side Tired Hearts. Come mai l’avete rilasciato ora e ci sono altri b-side nascosti da qualche parte?
Tired Hearts è stata registrata con l’album, ed ai tempi l’album era molto più pesante rispetto all’EP e volevamo aggiungere canzoni tirate, quindi non l’abbiamo messa. Ma è stata una delle nostre preferite per tanto tempo, una delle prime che abbiamo scritto. Quindi l’abbiamo tenuta lì e siccome stavano arrivando questi tour abbiamo pensato di rilasciarla. Ci sono un altro paio di b-side, ma se non li abbiamo pubblicati con l’album è perché non li amavamo troppo, quindi non penso usciranno.

E’ la seconda volta che venite in Italia quest’anno, e il concerto a febbraio è stato uno dei migliori che abbiamo visto ultimamente, cosa vi ricordate di quel giorno?
Mi ricordo che eravamo in tour con una band molto diversa ed il pubblico per forza era diverso, era una cosa che si notava molto durante le date del tour. Ma quel giorno siamo saliti sul palco e c’erano 300 italiani che impazzivano. Era assurdo, ero shockato dal fatto che potessi essere così lontano da casa e che ci fossero così tante persone che sapevano le parole… Tanti di loro non parlavano neanche inglese eppure potevano cantare le canzoni, è incredibile.

Questa volta invece state praticamente unendo due tour in uno, le date in apertura agli Anti-Flag più qualche headliner qui e la, ed avete passato praticamente tutto l’anno in tour. Senti che dovrete rallentare presto?
Non proprio. Penso di poter parlare per tutti nella band quando dico che questo è ciò che facciamo, è il nostro lavoro ora… E’ il sogno, fare qualcosa che ami ogni giorno, e viaggiare. Non c’è nulla a casa per noi, non abbiamo dei lavori, la mia fidanzata è in America e le ragazze degli altri sono giù in Australia, ma non abbiamo dei lavori che ci tengono lì. E’ bello tornare a casa e vedere le ragazze e roba del genere ma vuoi sempre ripartire.

Naturalmente le persone dopo un anno si chiedono se c’è roba nuova in cantiere…
Stiamo scrivendo al momento, ce la prendiamo con calma, ci lavoreremo per tanto tempo, non mi aspetterei nulla nel giro del prossimo mese o poco più, ma stiamo scrivendo.

Siccome il primo album ha avuto abbastanza successo, sentite pressione per rilasciare roba nuova?
Non credo. C’era pressione dopo l’EP, perché non avevamo mai scritto nulla… Cioé, gli altri avevano avuto delle band in passato, ma io non avevo mai scritto delle canzoni e c’era tanta pressione, “abbiamo scritto 5 canzoni… come ne facciamo altre 5 altrettanto belle?”, e poi l’album è uscito e ora vogliamo solo divertirci con il prossimo. Ci prenderemo il nostro tempo, non abbiamo paura di fare roba brutta ma vogliamo fare del nostro meglio. Non è pressione, è più emozione.

Non sono tante le band che si buttano subito su un album dopo un solo EP, come mai questa scelta?
Non lo so, credo sia proprio perché nessun’altro lo faceva, hanno tutti 5 EP alle spalle ed abbiamo pensato che avevamo scritto le prime 5 canzoni, perché non fare un album? Siamo molto giovani e non è una cosa che si vede spesso. E’ stato più difficile di quanto ci aspettassimo, credo avremmo potuto fare un EP o uno split prima, ma abbiamo fatto l’album e ci è piaciuto, ed è buono avere questa cosa, abbiamo già un album e siamo pronti per il prossimo.

Una delle cose che sentiamo spesso su Mend, Move On è che la tracklist è molto solida, ben pensata. Avete mai pensato di suonarlo per intero?
Non penso ci sia mai passato per la mente. Da Mend, Move On scegliamo le nostre canzoni preferite e le suoniamo, ed ogni tanto le cambiamo. Stiamo provando che le canzoni abbiano delle transizioni nei live set e roba del genere, perché abbiamo due release e l’EP è ancora piuttosto valido… Cerchiamo di suonare tracce da entrambi.

Per chiudere, siccome si avvicina la fine dell’anno, quali pensi siano stati alcuni degli album migliori?
Sto cercando di pensare a cosa sia uscito a inizio anno… Che cosa ho ascoltato di recente? “Cope” dei Manchester Orchestra è uscito quest’anno? (no, è del 2013 -ndr) E’ un gran album. Quello di Kendrick Lamar era molto figo… Cos’altro? L’album di Lana Del Rey mi piace tanto, è uno dei miei preferiti al momento… Credo sia questo ciò che sto ascoltando ultimamente, a parte Justin Bieber. Sto ascoltando tanto pop quest’anno, per qualche ragione!

ENGLISH VERSION

It’s been a year since Mend, Move On came out. Can you sum up what’s happened for you guys since then?
It was a strong release, I guess. We toured straight away at home, it was a good vibe all around, everybody seemed to like it. We went to Europe and the UK early, then we went to the States and we’re back here now, it’s kept us very busy and we’re proud of that record. It’s been good to us.

Is there a reason why you only chose two singles for the record?
Not really. I’m not sure what the normal is, so we just picked the two we thought were the most single-worthy of the album and released them with two videos.

If you could go back to a year ago, what would you have done differently for the purpose of this record and its promotion?
I would spend a lot more time writing it. I think any artist, as soon as they record it, they go back and say “ah fuck I wish I could go back and change that”. I’d spend a lot more time and chill out on it, and I guess I’d like to do something different… every band comes out, they release a music video, and they hype their record, and it’s stale, that process is old, if I were to change anything it would be thinking of a new, innovative way to present it.

You just recently published the b-side Tired Hearts, which was recorded ages back. Why did you release it now and are there any other b-sides hidden somewhere?
Tired Hearts was recorded with the record, at the time the album was quite a bit heavier than the EP, and we wanted to add as many heavy songs, so we kept that one back. But it’s been like a favorite of ours for a long time, one of the first songs we ever wrote actually. So we held on to it and coming on to this bunch of tours we thought we might as well release it. I think there’s a couple of other b-sides, but if they didn’t make it onto the record it’s probably because we weren’t very fond of them so I don’t think they will come out.

This is the second time you’ve come to Italy this year, and the gig in February was one of the best we’ve seen lately, what do you remember from that day?
I remember going on stage and… That tour, we were playing with a very different band and the crowd was very different, and that was very noticeable for most of that tour, and that day when we got on stage there were like 300 Italians just going nuts and it was crazy. I was so taken away, shocked that we could be so far away from home and so many people were there and they knew our words… A lot of them couldn’t speak English but could sing along to the songs which is unbelievable.

This time around you’re basically mixing two tours into one, supporting Anti-Flag but also doing some headline dates, and you’ve practically spent the whole last year constantly on tour. Do you feel like slowing down yet?
Not really. I think I can speak for the rest of the guys when I say that this is what we do, it’s our job now… It’s the dream, I guess, to do something you love every day, and travel. There’s nothing really at home for us, we don’t have jobs, and I have a girlfriend that’s in America, a couple of the guys have girlfriends in Australia, but no real jobs or anything else tying us down. It’s nice to go home and see your girlfriend and stuff like that but I don’t know, you want to get up and go.

Obviously people are starting to get anxious about new material after a year, are you already working on something?
We’re writing at the moment, we’re taking it very slow, we’re going to spend a lot of time on it, we’re going to chill out, I wouldn’t expect anything within the next month or so, but yeah we’re writing.

Since the first record had some considerable success, do you feel any pressure about putting out any new stuff?
Not really. There was pressure after the EP, because we had never really written anything… I mean, the guys had been in bands before me, but I never had written any songs before and there was definitely pressure, like, “we wrote 5 songs… how do we make another 5 songs that good?”, and then the album came out and now we just want to have fun with this next one. We’ll take our time, we’re not worried about doing bad, we just want to do the best possible thing. It doesn’t feel like pressure, more like excitement.

Most bands these days don’t usually jump right into LPs after one single EP, so why did you do it?
I’m not sure, I think it’s because nobody else was doing it, everybody has like five Eps behind them and we thought, we’ve written these 5 songs, why not put an album out? We’re very young, and you don’t see that often. It was more difficult than we expected, I think we could have done an EP or a split before that but we did the album and we liked it, and it’s cool to have that going for us, we have an album and we’re already going for the next one.

One of the things we recurrently hear about Mend, Move On is that the tracklist is very solid, very well thought out. Have you ever thought about playing it in full?
I don’t think it’s every crossed our minds. Mend, Move On live, we pick our favorite songs and we play them, and it changes around every now and then, we’ve been trying to have the songs flow into each other and stuff like that, because we have two real releases, and the EP is still quite valid in our set… We try to play tracks from both.

To close it up… Since 2015 is coming to an end, what do you think some of the best records of the year have been?
I’m trying to think what came out early… What have I been listening to? Did “Cope” by Manchester Orchestra come out of this year? (no, 2013 -e.d.) That one’s great. Kendrick Lamar was crazy… What else? Lana Del Rey’s new record, I love that, it’s one of my favorite records at the moment… I think that’s what I’ve been listening to most, besides Justin Bieber. I’ve been listening to a lot of pop releases this year for some reason!
