In occasione del loro concerto ai Magazzini Generali del 13 febbraio, abbiamo avuto il piacere di fare quattro chiacchiere con i Before You Exit. Ecco cosa ci hanno raccontato i tre giovani e simpatici fratelli McDonough!
Siete fratelli, questo rende più facile lavorare insieme o vi fa solo litigare di più?
Connor: Direi che è un cosa positiva, viviamo insieme tutto il tempo, succede che magari uno entra nella camera dell’altro e gli viene in mente un’idea per una canzone, e riusciamo a tirarla fuori velocemente, è una bella cosa, ma certamente essere insieme così spesso ci crea qualche problema.
Riley: battibecchi su cose stupide
Toby: cose da fratelli
Riley: Penso ci sia un legame che non può essere sostituito. Quando si è molto intimi con qualcuno si dice “essere come fratelli” e noi siamoveramente fratelli e quindi … abbiamo questo legame.
Essere insieme vi aiuta ad affrontare la distanza da casa?
Connor: Certo, decisamente!
Toby: Credo che la “casa” sia dove c’è la famiglia, e noi siamo spesso lontani da casa quindi ovviamente ne sentiamo la mancanza, ma ne vale la pena perchè siamo in tour ed è molto divertente.
Riley: La maggior parte delle volte ci portiamo la nostrafamiglia in tour insieme a noi, ad esempio i nostri genitori sono qui adesso… viaggiamo separatamente, ma è come se fossimo a casa.
Siete molto giovani,cosa ne pensa la vostra famiglia della carriera che avete intrapreso e quanto è importante per voi il loro supporto?
Connor: Tantissimo! La famiglia è molto importante per noi, li vogliamo avere sempre intorno almeno quando possono. Se hanno la possibilità di venire ai concerti quando noi siamo in giro è fantastico. Credo che la famiglia vada sempre messa al primo posto.
Toby: Mi piacerebbe molto poter portare con noi il nostro cane
Connor: Il nostro cane è di sicuro una delle cose migliori dell’esserea casa.
Ora siete in giro per l’Europa. Come sta andando il tour? Questa è la vostra prima volta in italia, cosa vi aspettate?
Connor: Fin ora è stato stupendo. Non sappiamo cosa dovremmo aspettarci. Ci è sempre stato detto che l’Europa è magnifica ma ora abbiamo l’occasione di provarlo in prima persona. Il pubblico è fantastico, abbiamo dei fan incredibili che vengono ai nostri concerti, e già il solo incontrarli e sentire le diverse lingue è una delle cose più belle per noi, è fantastico.
Toby: Solo che è un po’ difficile parlare con le persone a volte, tipo “cosa vuol dire? In inglese?”
Connor: si cerchiamo di capire, è difficile.
C’è un artista con cui vorreste condividere il palco?
Riley: Credo di parlare per tutti se dico che sarebbe grandioso andare in tour con i Maroon 5, li amiamo, amiamo la loro musica e credo che staremmo bene insieme a loro.
Toby: Sono d’accordo
Connor: Anche io
Che progetti avete peril futuro? Un nuovo disco magari?
Connor: Abbiamo scritto un po’ di roba ultimamente, stiamo lavorando su un paio di nuove canzoni, stiamo cercando di averne il più possible, scegliamo solo le migliori, ma ultimamente stiamo davvero cercando di scrivere più che possiamo perché siamo in tour ed è difficile. Anche dopo i concerti, suoniamo tutta la notte quando torniamo nel bus.
Toby: Stavamo lavorando su un brano proprio prima che arrivaste voi.
È davvero un buon momento per le “teen bands”, ma com’è aver a che fare con l’industria musicale ad una così giovane età?
Riley: Credo che molta gente lo faccia sembrare più difficile di come non lo sia in realtà, dato che la musica è il motivo per cui lo stai facendo non hai nessun problema a farlo. Tipo molta gente lo fa per i motivi sbagliati, ma se ami la musica e lo fai solo per quello allora non dovresti avere problemi perché lo vuoi fare solo per la musica.
Toby: Abbiamo sicuramente imparato come funziona la vita, come cavarcela da soli.
Non vorremmo sembrare troppo profondi, ma non vi ha mai spaventati? Tipo pensando al futuro…
Connor: Pensare al futuro manda fuori di testa chiunque, devi andare avanti a testa alta e non preoccuparti del domani, vivere il momento, pensando sempre al futuro non ci si gode la vita.
Riley: pianifica il futuro, vivi il presente.
Siete sempre impegnati a suonare dal vivo, ma vi piace anche andare a sentire altre band? Qual è il miglior concerto a cui siete stati?
Connor: Vediamo moltissimi concerti.
Riley: Credo che il mio concerto preferito sia… abbiamo suonato all’iHeart Radio festival nel 2014 e quello è stato il mio preferito. Non so se ci sarà mai un concerto migliore di quello, c’erano così tante band diverse, moltissima musica, tutto insieme e potevi “assaggiare” un po’ di tutto che è proprio il metodo con cui ascolto la musica quindi era un po’ come vedere tutto quello che ascolto dal vivo davanti a me per questo dico che è stato fantastico. C’erano i Coldplay, i Maroon 5, tante band stupende.
Connor: I Coldplay sono stati il miglior concerto per noi, assolutamente. Crescendo abbiamo sempre suonato le loro canzoni, avevamo forse 13, 11 e 9 anni, e suonavamo le loro canzoni e poi ci siamo ritrovati a suonare ad un concerto con loro ed è la cosa più surreale del mondo, qualcosa che non avremmo mai nemmeno sognato.
Questa è la nostra ultima domanda, quella che facciamo a tutte le band che intervistiamo: cosa ne pensate delle uova?
Connor: il cibo?
Toby: tipo le uova strapazzate
Connor: amiamo le uova
Toby: ma è una specie di domanda trabocchetto?
Tutti: le uova sono molto buone
You are brothers, does it make it easier to work together? Or does that just make you argue a lot haha
Connor: I’d say it makes it better for sure, we live together all the time, to be able to just walking into the other guys’ room and have a song idea or any idea in general, you’re able to hatch it out real quick, it’s great thing, but definitely being together so much creates some problems
Riley: little arguments about like stupid things
Toby: brothers stuff.
Riley: I think there’s a bond, though, you can’t replace. Everybody who’s super close would say ‘we’re like brothers’ and we actually are brothers so you know. We’ve got this bond!
Does being with your brothers help you dealing with the distance from home?
Connor: Oh yeah obviously for sure
Toby: I think home is where the family is, and we’re away from home all the time so obviously you get a little homesick but tour is worth it and it’s a lot of fun
Riley: Most of the times we actually brings our family out on tour with us, like our parents they’re here right now but they’re like travelling separately, but it feels like we’re home all the time
You’re very young, how was for your family having to do with your career and how much does their support means to you?
Connor: A lot! Our family is really important for us, we always want them to be with us when they can at least. If they can come out to a show and stuff while we’re out on the road that’s awesome. I think that family comes first in everything
Toby: I just wish we could bring our dog with us
Connor: Our dog is definitely one of our favorite parts of being home
You’re currently travelling across Europe. How’s tour been so far? And this is your first time ever in Italy. What do you expect?
Connor: It’s been awesome so far. We didn’t know what to expect coming over. We’ve always heard that Europe is awesome but now we get to experience it first hand. The crowd’s been amazing, we had incredible fans coming up to all the shows, and like just getting to meet everybody and hear the different languages, there’s no cooler feeling for us, it’s awesome.
Toby: It’s just a little hard to talk to people, sometimes like ‘what was that? English?’
Connor: yeah we try to understand, it’s difficult
Is there an artist you wish you could share the stage with?
Riley: I think I speak on the behalf of all of us when I say Maroon 5 would be a great act to tour with, we love them, we love their music and I think it would be a really good fit
Toby: I agree with that
Connor: I agree
What’s coming next for you guys? New music maybe?
Connor: We’ve been writing a whole bunch lately, working on a bunch of new songs, trying to get as many as you can, really we just picked the best ones but lately it’s just been writing writing writing as much as we can, when we can, because we’re on tour, it’s just kinda hard. Even after shows we’ve been playing music all night when we come back on the bus
Toby: We were just working on a song before you guys came in
It’s actually a good moment for ‘teen bands’, but how is it to deal with the music industry at such a young age?
Riley: I think a lot of people overcomplicate it and as long as music is the reason you’re doing it I think you won’t have any problem with it. Like some people do it for wrong reasons, as long as you love music and you’re just doing it for the music then any issue that might occur, wouldn’t be an issue, because you just wanna do it for the music.
Toby: We’ve definitely learned a lot about how life works, how shit goes down.
Don’t wanna get too deep, but does this whole thing ever scare you? Like thinking about the future.
Connor: The future definitely can freak everybody out, you gotta keep your head up and don’t worry about tomorrow, just live today, if you look at tomorrow all the time you’re not going to enjoy life.
Riley: Plan for the future, live in the moment
You’re always busy playing shows, but do you have sometimes the opportunity to go see other bands play? Which is the best show you’ve been to?
Connor: We get to see a lot of shows.
Riley: I think my favorite show, we played the iHeart Radio festival in 2014 and that was my favorite. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to see a better show, there were so many different acts and music coming together and you get a little taste of everything and the way that I listen to music is a little bit of everything so it was almost like getting to see what I listen to live in front of me, so I think that show was amazing. There was like Coldplay, Maroon 5, so many amazing acts.
Connor: Coldplay was definitely the highlight for us. Growing up we always played their songs, we’d be probably 13, 11 and 9, sitting around playing coldplay songs and then you play at a show with coldplay and it’s the most surreal feeling in the world, something we couldn’t ever even dream of
This is our last question and we ask it to every band we interview. It goes: what do you think about eggs?
Connor: Like food?
Toby: Like scrambled eggs
Connor: We love eggs
Toby: Is that like a trick question or something?
All: eggs are really good
